UP FROM THE UNDERGROUND, RUSSIA'S FEMINISTS REACH OUT
There was a time in Russia when feminists were seen as dangerous dissidents. Their clandestine magazines were part of the underground literary movement and once found out, they were in trouble. Leading activists then included Olga Lipovskaya, who published a journal entitled Women Reading, and Tatiana Mamonova, whose magazine, Maria, launched in the 1980s, led to her deportation. THE 9TH INTERNATIONAL FORUM AWID
The 9th International Forum AWID (Assoñiasion for Women’s Rights and Development) took place on October 3 – 6 2002 in Guadalajara (Mexico).
AWID's 9th International Forum brought together over 1,000 for the largest recurring event in women rights and development outside the United Nations system. They came together to advance solutions for achieving gender equality and justice, build strategic international alliances, strengthen advocacy campaigns and put new issues on the development and human rights agenda. The AWID Forum provided a platform for a solutions-oriented approach to profound global changes, and their effects on the lives of women.
In the framework of the Forum the team of Women’s Public Organization “Femina” presented its project “Girls and New Technologies” assisted by Women’s Network Program – Russia of the Institute of Open Society (Soros Foundation).
Issues discussed on the Forum will be published in a new edition of the magazine for youth “Girls Ask for Attention!” |
THE REGIONAL CONFERENCE “SOCIAL PARTNERSHIP FOR SOLVING GENDER PROBLEMS” On September 4 – 5, 2002 in Naberezhnye Chelny the Regional Conference “Social Partnership for solving Gender Problems in the Privolzhskiy Federal District” will be held. The Conference is hosted by Women Public Organization “Femina” in the framework of the project “Gender Component of Social Partnership as a resource of Democratic Development”. The key goal of the conference is to summarize an experience, to elaborate “Regional Plan for solving Gender Problems in PFD”, to form expert groups on the thematic lines: Labor and Employment, Health and Reproductive Rights, Violence Free Family, Business Practices, Promotion to decision-making levels. NEW PUBLICATION: INTEGRATION OF A GENDER APPROACH INTO SOCIAL POLICY OF THE REGION
It includes materials records) of the International Conference held during the Millennium year of Kazan city as well as results of the studies carried out in the framework of a project “Towards Gender Equality by the Public Feminine Organization FEMINA in partnership with the US organization Vital Voices in 2004. Studies have been carried out over 18 cities of the Federal Volga Region. This book also contains a Gender Development Program in the Federal Volga Region being a product of joint efforts of a number of women’s and human rights organizations. The articles are describing the gender aspects of the social policy, problems of gender equality and practice of introducing the gender strategies in regions. Results of our study are highlighting the areas of labor and employment, reproductive health, display of gender inequality by mass media, domestic violence.
This book is designed for the government officers, employees of social departments and public leaders and can serve to them as a source of information regarding the situation with women’s rights and development of the rights defending strategies. The book was published with assistance of the US International Development Agency in the framework of the “Partner” Program, executed by the International Research and Scientific Exchange Council (IREX). We are beginning the publications of selected articles from this book which have been translated due to support of the Publishing Program of Network of East-West Woman.

SECOND EDITION OF THE MANUEL “HUMAN RIGHTS FOR WOMEN” WPO “Femina” published the second edition of the Manuel “Human Rights for Women” that was a part of the project on legal education for women and comprised results of studies, effectuated during the training for women in the Privolzhsky Federal District. The Manuel comprises the training methodology, detailed description of its stages and exercises; materials about International Institutes’ work and mechanisms of Women’s Rights Advocacy; methods of gathering evidence of violated women’s rights.
